Mapping With Caltopo

Over the last year I had been searching for a solid map setup that I could use digitaly. But it had to have the option to print maps in scale. As easy a this sounds it really isnt that easy to find as I found out. But thankfully i stumbled across Caltopo through Search and Rescue.

You have 3 ways to access Caltop Online Browser, Ofline Browser and iOS/Android App. So you are covered from all fronts to have access to the maps that you desire.

You have multiple map layers that can be overlayed, custimized and dialed in for your aplication. From MapBuilder Topo all te way to daily satelite views (pro version only) you should have no problem finding the map you need.

From day one i realized that the conifgration options is endless. Not to mention they are adding featuers day in and day out. Over the summer they where able to load data showing active fires all over North America. This is handy while out exploring to know where to go and where to avoid. Then about two months back they added live avalanche forecasts from Avalanche Canada and many other groups across North America. This is handled by map overlays which gives you full custimzation of your map.

I find my self using the fire, avalanche and shared mapbuilder overlays on a almost daily bases depending on the time of year. Another usefull tool is the slope angle shading for route finding off the beaten path.

Once you wrap up your maping, route building, and are happy with the data shown you are able to print these maps in your favorite format UTM, LatLong, etc. This allows for 100% accurate maping of the area to be transfered to paper. I do this for ever adventure I go on and also tag this as a pdf with my digital trip plan.
